Sensei Ian Cuthbert
Sensei Ian Cuthbert, 8th Dan, is the founder of the United Karate Association. He is also a board member for Karate England, General secretary of KE and a founder member of the NGB English Karate.

Sensei Ian began his Karate journey at the age of 16 at Epping Sports Centre, with Sensei Vernon Bell in Yoseikan style. After attaining two grades he moved to a club in Theydon Bois with Sensei Lawrence Wiles, where he began to learn Wado Ryu. Sensei Ian found this style to be more interesting and this eventually led him down the road of teaching when his Sensei moved away.

Sensei Ian later trained in the style of Shito Ryu, which he found to make more sense in terms of internal body mechanics. Sensei Ian strongly believes that the most important aspect of Karate is discipline and loyalty to your club and Sensei. He has been with his current teacher Jim Uglow for over 17 years and enjoys every moment.

Sensei Ian learns Kung Fu and Tai Chi from Jim Uglow although these two Martial Arts are Chinese, Sensei Ian would say he has learnt more about Karate through these Martial Arts than he had from a Japanese Sensei. Karate does of course originate from Kung Fu.
